Macular Degeneration

It’s estimated that 1 in 10 people aged between 55 and 64 have age related macular degeneration. In those aged over 85, this ratio increases to 1 in 2. The macula is responsible for central vision which determines your ability to read, write and drive. There are two types of macular degeneration, which is the deterioration of the macula- the small central area of the eye’s retina.

What Does Wet Macular Degeneration Treatment Involve?

Injections are a treatment option for the “wet” macular degeneration which is the more advanced and damaging form of this condition. At The McIndoe Centre, we perform three types of injection for macular degeneration.

The injections are carried out at regular intervals for a set amount of time. You will be advised by your surgeon about the length of time needed. The medication is inserted into your eye using a very fine needle and you will be given local anaesthetic eye drops.

What Are The Benefits Of These Treatments?

The benefits of the injections are to slow down the loss of visual acuity and sometimes even increase visual acuity. With the lens implant, your reading vision and near vision should be improved. Neither option cures macular degeneration but there are other things you can do to decrease the risk of the condition developing and your surgeon can advise you on those.

Recovery After Treatment

After the injections, you may feel slight scratching for a few days, but that won’t stop you doing normal activities.

What Are The Possible Complications Of These Treatments?

Your surgeon will discuss all the benefits and risks in full at your consultation. At The McIndoe Centre, we do everything we can to minimise the risk of complications.
