Cosmetic Surgery Q&A: Mr Asit Khandwala

In this Consultant Q&A video, Mr Asit Khandwala, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, shares his expertise across three key areas. He begins by emphasising the importance of a personalised consultation to determine which procedure best suits your needs, highlighting the differences between a mini and full facelift.

He then explains the various areas that can be treated with liposuction, before discussing the common reasons patients seek male chest reduction surgery and the available treatment options.

Q1. Is a mini facelift right for me?

A. Very often I have a patient that comes in asking for a mini facelift simply because they want a short, sweet procedure that gets them back to work quickly. A facelift can never be a mini facelift just because you want it like that, one must address the problems that are there. So, if you require a neck lift, or if you require your eyes doing, you may not require a facelift at all, or you may require a neck lift and a facelift.

We will evaluate your photographs, we will explain the procedure to you, and we will dissect each part of your face to determine what actually needs doing. So do think about this before you embark on the facelift journey.

Q2. What areas of the body can be treated with liposuction?

A. Liposuction can't make a fat person thin. Many people come to see me for liposuction thinking that they will have small scars and a quick recovery, and often that is not the case. Liposuction will address some areas of the body well, so areas of the chest, the hips, the flanks on either side, the outer thighs work well.

The tummy will often sag a little bit if the liposuction is carried out without an abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck. That's why one has to decide whether liposuction is the right procedure for you, or if you require actual surgery with something like a tummy tuck. But liposuction will make a gentle change in clothes and not change you completely.

Q3. What are the types of male chest reduction (gynaecomastia)?

A. I often see male patients with one-sided breast enlargement. Often, they've taken some cheap protein shakes, and once they've stopped those protein shakes, they start developing a breast on one side. Now, that's why I always tend to dissuade patients from supplements that contain hormones.

These patients can present in two ways. One is a small breast, which may be amenable to liposuction with small incisions around the side of the breast, or the larger ones often need a scar excision of the glandular tissue, so that's physically removing the glandular tissue with or without liposuction. But we'd have to actually see the patient to determine which procedure they would be suitable for.

Mr. Khandwala trained and graduated from the Grant Medical College in Bombay. Having been in the field of plastic surgery for 28 years, Asit is highly experienced and performs a wide range of procedures.
